Hello from the murky Depths

Post by Cyren »

Hi guys,

If you may or may not know, I've been gone for about 2 weeks now. My National Guard unit got activated, so I've been down in the New Orleans area doing what I can. If you are familiar with this area I can point you at St. Bernard Perish / Calmette, Arabi, etc.

So far I've done Security, Cleanup, and (worst of all) searches of many many houses. This is diffucult because these houses were basically under water and now have been molding and decaying for about 3 weeks. The amount of devastation is unreal.

In any case I expect to LEAVE here in about 2 more weeks, something I must say I'm looking forward to. So after we drive 1300 miles back (at 45 miles an hour) I'll be back home. I'm expecting the 7th or 8th maybe.

Anyway have fun and I'll see you guys later. Xen you can't quit until I come back ;)

"Sergeant" Cyren

ps- I made it into one of the big Denver papers, I could link it maybe if anyone is interested.

I'm Back!

Post by Cyren »

Hey guys, thanks for all the good wishes. It is with mixed feelings I can report that I am now back home safe in Colorado. I still have some military stuff to do over the next two weeks.

Hurricane Rita was too dangerous for us to stay in place, so Tuesday we evacuated to Alexandria, LA, and from there we decided just to come home. On the one hand I am happy to come back to a place that is clean with running water and electricity. Not to mention gas stations and taco bells. On the other hand, when I think about the now 4 million displaced Americans it makes me sad. I've seen just a glimpse of how hard life has become for them, and it is not pretty.

I am very happy to hear that Arthen is safe, and you said your house stayed above water? That's good because I saw thousands of homes utterly destroyed by floodwaters. Imagine coming home and seeing a rough pile of moldy lumber where your home used to be, or worse, half a mile down the road.

The magnitude of this tragedy is staggering. I hope everyone can help in one small way or another to help bring things back together again. And now hurricane Rita threatens to level the good citizens of Texas. :(

Sorry, I didn't intend to write an essay. Driving a HMMWV "Hummer" 1300 miles in 3 days can make you crazy! :p Anyways hope to get onto WoW soon.

ps- Arthen if you wanna PM me I'd be glad to hear from you :)

PSS- Here's the link to the article. I'm in the first picture, not really a good angle of me and I'm all sweaty. The dude in the front of the pic is my bud, but he's kind of an Army noob and I can make him do pushups for me :p http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/l ... 25,00.html
