Final Fantasy (U.S Release numbers) 1,2,3,7,8,9, 12
Chrono Trigger, obviously.
Secret of Evermore.
Illusion of Gaia
Star Ocean
Xenogears

God, I have played and Beat a million trillion amazing RPGS, but this is all I can think of off the top of my head.

*Edit - Cant believe I forgot the first bunch of BOF games. The last couple BOF games were kinda gay.

Even though it's more strategy than RPG I recommend Final Fantasy Tactics.

I also enjoyed Wild Arms 3 for the PS2, even though it's not as traditional as other RPG's it's got a unique and exciting feel, style, and flow.

Also Star Ocean 2 was fun, I don't recommend going for all the different endings though

And of course the others listed, especially Xenogears and Chronotrigger. If you don't have an SNES or don't want to play Chronotrigger on an emulator on your PC they re-released it for playstion along with Final Fantasy 4 (2 in the U.S. I think?). The package is called Final Fantasy Chronicles.

Another good one is Final Fantasy 6 (re-released for playstaion along with FF5 in Final Fantasy Anthology).
Sit vis vobiscum.
May the dp/dt be with you.

Suikoden 1 & 2 (Can be expensive to get on Ebay, but there is a PSP version with 1 & 2 in Japan, heres hoping it crosses the ocean)
Dragon Quest VIII
Wild Arms (The first one)
Breath of Fire 1, 2, 3
Beyond the Beyond (Good luck finding this one they barely released any of this one. However it's good for the first RPG on PS1)
Tales of Destiny (Another hard to find one)

I am a huge fan of 2-D rpgs so they have mostly dominated my list. Aside from Breath of Fire 3 and Dragon Quest 8.

Heh...I'm stuck at school waiting on a seminar to begin so I decided to look around.

This topic caught my eye. I realize it's quite old, but I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in anyways...

Best RPG ever imo = Final Fantasy 7

If you haven't played that one, you MUST get ahold of a copy very very soon!!!

The next 2 drive a VERY close 2nd and 3rd.

Shining Force 1 and Shining Force 2 for the Sega Genesis.

These two titles kick ass!!! I don't think very many of these were produced and released in the US. I bought a copy of Shining Force 2 at a used game store about 10 years ago and it cost me $40. I have no clue what it would cost now. You can download these as roms and play them on a genesis emulator. I HIGHLY recommend you do this!!!

Other great RPGs I've played...

All the Final Fantasy games...although I have to say I think 8 was my least favorite and it seems like everyone loves that one. I wasn't the biggest fan.

Suikoden is a GREAT line. Those games are also hard to find and expensive.

Breath of Fire - I first played 3 and then 4 on Playstation and loved them. I never did pick up 1 or 2.

Xenogears is a MUST! I started Xenosaga and still own it, but I never could get into it. It's just not the same. Xenogears has an amazing plot to it!!!

I own Beyond the Beyond and yes it was very good. I bought it because a lot of the screen shots of the game look identical to shots in Shining Force, except you don't battle the same way. If you saw the 2 you'd understand what I meant.

OMG OMG...Lunar and Lunar 2 are awesome. I can't believe I forgot those. Both of these are great classic style RPGs with AMAZING plot lines and twists. The voiceovers are heartfelt and really make you develop a relationship with your party members. It completely sucked me in. I couldn't do anything else once I started these!!! ZOMG go buy and play these either on the Sega CD...lol...or the later PS release.

Chronotrigger
Chronocross
Earthbound - a strange yet entertaining RPG for the SNES...download the rom
Super Mario RPG - Yes, it may sound odd, but this game gave me a little trouble!!!
Legend of Dragoon
Tales of Destiny - Strange games imo but fun
Star Ocean
Illusions of Gaia was like an attempt at a zelda-ish game imo...it was fun
Zelda...lol...I really only enjoyed the original on NES...2 sucked imo

I hear Kingdom Hearts is amazing, but I haven't had the time to pick up either of the two available titles yet.

That's all the games I can think of atm, but I'm sure I'm leaving out a few I've played.

If you didn't read anything out of this whole post, you must play FF 7, Shining Force 1, Shining Force 2, Lunar: Silver Star Story, and Lunar 2.

And if you want to challenge yourself to your own game, pick up a copy of the game RPGMaker 3 for PS2 and make your own RPG!!!

GOGOGOGOGOGOGO

God I love console RPGs!!!
